It’s a hugely powerful computer designed specifically for gaming, but obviously it can handle anything else you’ll need it to do.

Let’s talk specs. It comes with a 17 inch full HD screen, a second generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, a GeForce graphics card packed with RAM, and can support up to 32GB of system memory. It comes with a gaming keyboard that’s meant to take more of a beating than a typical laptop. You can trick it out as you please with a solid state drive, various DVD burners and players, and more. This is by no means a cheap laptop, of course. You’ll pay upwards of $2500 for the highest end versions of it.

You don’t have to replace it anytime soon.

The Intel Core i7 CPU pumps out serious power and even more impressive is the Nvidia GTX 560M video card with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM. It will do all the work your games need, freeing the processor to make the rest of the experience even speedier. You can customize your hard drive up to 750GB and add up to 16GB of RAM. There’s a built in Blu-Ray player, an 8-in-1 card reader, an HD webcam, jacks galore for anything you need to plug in, impressive built in speakers, full-HD LED-backlit display, backlit gaming keyboard and more. If you don’t want to buy the top of the line Asus offers cheaper versions that pull back on some of the higher end components.

The latest model in line, the Sony VAIO VGN-UX380N is a successor of the VAIO UX180P with an improved Intel Core Solo CPU (1.33 MHz) and Windows Vista as an operating system. Its size is only 6 x 3.74 x 1.27 inches and the weight is 1.2 pounds. The display is a 4.5-inch WSVGA touch-sensitive matrix (1024 x 600), and there is a variety of features that this tiny machine is packed with: a backlit slide-out keyboard, a good selection of ports (4xUSB, Firewire), 100-Mbit Ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g wifi, support for WWAN, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, a 40 GB hard disk and even a webcam. The notebook ships with a 2600 mAh battery that provides for about 3 hours of working time.

The laptop may be on the pricey side ($1,899) and, perhaps not fast enough for running Windows Vista (I’m sure you can achieve better performance if you downgrade to Windows XP), its main advantage is its portability and connectivity. If you want a computer that you can carry easily during travel and get online wherever cellular networks are available, the Sony VAIO VGN-UX380N will be totally worth its money for you.

It’s 14.1″ wide and comes in at just 5.8 pounds.
The laptop comes with a dual layer DVD drive, a battery with more lasting power than is typical, and dedicated backwards and forwards keys for browsing the internet (another nod to the sometimes frustrating experience of browsing the web with a laptop touchpad). The laptop is fairly powerful too. It comes with a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 processor, 1GB of ram (expandable to 4GB), three USB ports, a mini-FireWire port, PC Card and ExpressCard slots, and more.

It’s a remarkable accomplishment and while it wasn’t a huge commercial success it still has value for the right consumer.

The VAIO UX180P is the latest in the line (and not the last, I believe) and it’s only 4.5″. What a tiny screen! It displays bright, vibrant colors at 1024×600 and comes with a Solo Ultra Low Voltage CPU and Windows XP Professional. Advanced wireless capabilities are built in and since it uses Windows you’ll already know how to use all the applications. It comes with a small keyboard that is simple to use and a touchscreen. Today’s mobile phones offer stiff competition for the VAIO UX180P, which is probably why Sony will most likely release an upgrade to this model shortly, but it’s a viable option if you want something a little bigger and more powerful than a phone for your needs.
