Staples is in the game for the pre black Friday laptop deals too. They have an Acer Aspire AS5733Z-4516 15.6″ Laptop on sale for $329.99 after taking $100 off the regular price. You can pick up three HP Pavilion laptops for up to $200 off. The cheapest goes for $349.99 and the most expensive for $599.99. You get a fair amount of power for that price, making it a great deal that you don’t want to miss out. Toshiba has a 15.6″ laptop on sale for only $599.99 as well and it’s something of a powerhouse. As a side note, isn’t it great that laptop prices have sunk so much in recent years? Nowadays you can get plenty of power for a totally reasonable price that won’t bankrupt you.

Acer announces plans for Ultrabook

Acer has announced that the company is going to introduce a new significant addition to the Aspire line of laptops this September, the Acer Ultrabook. It is going to be a 13-inch laptop with thickness as low as 13 mm (0.5 inches) and weight as low as 1.3 kg (2.86 lbs). The specifications of the Ultrabook are still not made public, but it is clear that Acer is going to use one of Intel’s mobile processors from Core i line. The battery life is expected to be about 6 hours which is very impressive.

If Acer’s plans come true, their Ultrabook is going to become one of the first ultra-thin notebooks that run on Windows operating system. Many other laptop manufacturers, including ASUS TeK Computers, also expressed interest in producing their own Ultrabooks in the nearest future.

Acer Iconia: not as good as it seemed

Back in Feb i have posted an announcement that Acer Iconia 6120, a dual screen tablet PC, was about to hit the markets. Well, now that the laptop started selling and the first buyers had a chance to review it, it appeared that this fancy gadget might be not as good as it initially seemed.

While it was obvious that Acer Iconia, having two displays, must be a real battery-burner, noone would expect its running time on batteries to be only 2 hours. It’s rather heavy for a 14-inch laptop (6.18 lbs) and it heats noticeably during operation. The bottom screen appears to be hard to use under a bright light, and the Acer’s gesture utilities that come with a laptop are plain half-baked. Compared to Wacom’s tablet PCs, which allow for almost natural writing, it’s almost impossible to write with a finger on Acer Iconia, and the virtual keyboard that has noticeable lags will anger an average laptop user who got used to typing on regular keyboards. Also, the device lacks a DVD and media card readers.

Bottom Line: while Acer Iconia 6120 is a stylish and innovative gadget, it leaves you desiring for more and is indeed not ready for prime time.
