Dell XPS 14z laptop
With the release of its 14 inch XPS 14z notebook Dell is able to claim the title of world’s thinnest fully featured laptop. What they mean is that it has a slot-loading optical drive (DVD drive), unlike the MacBook air. If you’ve always wanted a super thin notebook but need that drive, your day has come. The laptop starts at $999 (by no means a free laptop) but it comes with a fair amount of power for that cost. It’s built on Sandy Bridge platform and comes with an Intel i5 or i7 dual core processor, up to 8GB of memory, and you can put in an impressive NVidia video card if you like to play games or what tons of movies. If you’re a power used the 256GB solid state drive is wonderful and will make your computer much faster. The standard hard drive is 750GB, proving plenty of space. The computer is available in the US on November 1 and worldwide November 15.

Track your stolen laptop

Anti-theft protection for a laptop, iPhone or iPadThere’s a super sweet program out there called GadgetTrak. If someone grabs your computer thinking they go a free laptop they’re wrong as long as you have this program installed. It can locate your laptop or phone using its GPS chip (if your mobile computer has one) and wi-fi positioning. It’s amazing and it locates your device to an exact area. What’s even cooler is that if your laptop has a camera (and what laptop doesn’t these days) it will activate the webcam, start taking pictures and sending them to you. Chances are good you’ll get some useful information out of that (at the very least it will be super cool).

Laptops, tablets and smartphones are exceptionally popular to steal these days, so it would be wise to invest in a program like this that will protect you from thieves looking to profit from your trusting nature. To cover all possible kinds of users, there are Windows, Mac OS X, iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Android versions of GadgetTrak, so whatever device you use, you can install this security program on it.

Also, the last but not the least important thing – be sure not to leave your laptop or phone unattended for even a little bit of time. People can be awfully mean and steal from you.

You know how frustrating it can be when a fully charged laptop battery that should supposedly last you over 3 hours, quietly dies after one hour of operation leaving you with work undone, movie unwatched, email unsent or Skype call unfinished. Running out of battery life when you’re on the go can certainly ruin your day and if you’ve already been in such situation, you’ll certainly want to avoid it in the future.

Battery Eater: main window

This is where a program like Battery Eater comes handy. It is a benchmarking tool for your laptop’s battery that tests your battery’s performance; estimates the minimum working time of a laptop, given all power saving options are turned off. The software is 100% free and the size of a download is less than 800 kb, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t try it ASAP.

PC gamers have been marginalized with the popularization of the consoles (Xbox and PS2/3) but it’s still a huge market and new games come along all the time to take advantage of the latest video card technology. We’re not abandoned on the accessories front either. In fact, it’s in the accessories market that PC gamers get the greatest advantage.

Razer Boomslang 1800 dpi Gaming Mouse

Take the Razer Boomslang Gaming Mouse for example. It’s one of the most advanced mice on the market and it comes with all sorts of features to make your gaming more effective, efficient, and fun. It features an 1800 DPI 3D infrared tracking model, 5 programmable buttons, a gold-plated USB connector (utterly silly but awesome nonetheless), and 32KB of onboard memory to save your profiles (you can change the button functions for each game and use the onboard memory to save a profile for each game).

It also needs to be said that the original Razer Boomslang ball mouse was launched in 1998 and became pretty much legendary. As of now the Collector’s Edition 2007 mouse is sold at Amazon for as much as $1,259.

Notepal U – a laptop stand, a cooler and a USB hub

Notepal U laptop stand/coolerIf you spend a lot of time before your laptop, you’ve probably already realized that it’s much more convenient to work or play when your laptop is positioned on a stand, be it one like Notepal S that we wrote about 4 years ago, or the one you made yourself from a cardboard box ;) In any case, we hope that you’re going to welcome the Notepal U, a new ergonomic laptop stand from Cooler Master with two noiseless fans.

This new multi-functional laptop stand was presented in August 2001. Besides actually an aluminum stand, this device also features two silent 100 mm fans that facilitate batter air flow around your laptop and help prevent its overheating, and a 3-port USB hub. One interesting touch is that it’s possible to adjust the position of fans the way you like it so you can align them to the hottest components of your laptop for better cooling. Thanks to adjustable anti-slip holders, the stand is compatible with laptops ranging in size from 9 to 17 inches, keeping them in place tightly in any of 5 available height levels.

Overall, Cooler Master has really hit the nail with their latest laptop stand and we can recommend Notepal U to all laptop users who are looking for more comfort while working on their computers.

Cute and funny USB drives

3 October 2011 9 Comments

My good old 256MB USB drive that I bought probably 5 years ago has finally died and I needed a new one. I went to the local computer shop not far from my place to see what they had, but the ones they had in stock were a bit pricey and dull looking, while I wanted a USB drive that would not only serve its purpose, but also look funny and attractive. So I decided to go get a new one at Ebay. To my pleasure, the prices for USB flash drives were definitely lower there and the variety of designs they had was simply astonishing. Here are the USB flash drives that I and my wife thought to be the most cute and funny.

A USB drive that mimics a broken cable. Very creative.
