Dell XPS 14z – an ultra-thin laptop with a DVD drive

With the release of its 14 inch XPS 14z notebook Dell is able to claim the title of world’s thinnest fully featured laptop. What they mean is that it has a slot-loading optical drive (DVD drive), unlike the MacBook air. If you’ve always wanted a super thin notebook but need that drive, your day has come.

The laptop starts at $999 but it comes with a fair amount of power for that cost. It’s built on Sandy Bridge platform and comes with an Intel i5 or i7 dual core processor, up to 8GB of memory, and you can put in an impressive NVidia video card if you like to play games or what tons of movies. If you’re a power used the 256GB solid state drive is wonderful and will make your computer much faster. The standard hard drive is 750GB, proving plenty of space. The computer is available in the US on November 1 and worldwide November 15.

The Dell Mini 10 is not upgradable beyond 1 GB

The Dell Mini 10, a successor to the Mini 9, which is expected this week, should come out with Intel’s new 1.6GHz Atom Z530 CPU and smaller amount of RAM of 1 GB. To make things worse, it seems that it would not be possible to add more memory to the system. Does this mean the RAM will be welded or attached to the motherboard? Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly the result of licensing limitations imposed by Microsoft for the netbook.

As per Microsoft’s license system, Windows XP can’t be bundled with machines that contain more than 1GB of RAM. Netbooks typically come with XP, as it is leaner and faster than Vista. With other models, however, the physical RAM upgrade is cheap and easy, allowing for running multiple programs or memory intensive applications like Photoshop much better.

Other features of the new netbook include the 160-GB hard drive which gives you plenty of space for storing your audio and working documents, an HDMI-out port for watching video on your big-screen TV and an integrated 1.3-megapixel webcam.

King of laptops, the Dell Latitude XT2

The Dell Latitude XT2 tablet PC is a machine that is well built and has something for everybody. Not only it has a superb look in its 0.98-inch thick chassis, the features of this laptop are quite appealing to the business crowd, to which this laptop is obviously aimed: a multi touch display, a second digitizer, a 6 cell battery that provides for 11 hours of continuous work. Here is a short review of Dell Latitude XT2:

Design
On the first look, this tablet PC seems nothing like a machine from Dell. With the whole thing done up in black, it looks somewhat intimidating. The tablet has a slate form factor and it feels really strong. Changing between notebook and slate forms only reassures its strong built.

Processor
The tablet comes with the option of 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo or 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo processors. Neither of the options stands much of a chance when compared to a full notebook though.

Display
The tablet has a screen of 12.1″ which is LED backlit. An option for an “exceptionally bright” sunlight viewable transflective panel is also there.

Connectivity
The PC has 802.11n wireless, Firewire, Bluetooth, eSATA, Ethernet and only 2 USB ports, which is somewhat of a downfall on this one.

Performance
The tablet does not give very powerful performance. In this era of Apple products having 10 hours of long battery life, the Dell’s battery life is a dismal 2 hours and 40 minutes in full video playback from a USB flash drive. Its graphics score is also very low, however the keyboard and track pad are good.

Conclusion
The Dell Latitude XT2 will only sell for its sturdy built and excellent battery life. Other than that, it does not have anything exciting to offer.

Dell Inspiron 1525 art series notebook

Today Dell has unveiled a new edition of their Inspiron 1525 15.4-inch notebook that is going to be to liking of those who like stylish things. This new art series notebooks feature genuine artwork from a famous Brooklyn-based designer and artist Mike Ming on their lids. Lots of people might recall Sony with their art edition VAIO laptops by May Hayuk or the artist edition HP Pavilion dv2800t notebook. The trendy artist has chosen Dell to have his work featured on their laptops. For that, two unique art works were created, the “Bunch o’ Surfers” and “Sea Sky”.

The technology that the printing was made ensures that the painting work will stand up well to normal daily usage and won’t wear off easily over time. In fact, it pretty much reproduces the tattoo effect, accurately bringing alive every single brushstroke on a laptop’s lid.

The laptops are available for order from Dell’s site starting at $699, so if you want your new laptop to speak for you and be more personalized, this special edition Dell 1525 might be just for you.
